Euro 2020 Top Goalscorers: Everything you Need to Know ahead of the Knockouts

The Golden Boot award is the next most coveted title in the European Championships. Before the tournament, we at Bet India predicted potential players who can make the cut to become the Euros 2020 top goalscorers.

Let’s take a look at how things stand before the playoffs get underway this weekend.

Present Standings

Cristiano Ronaldo – 5 Goals
Romelu Lukaku, Georginio Wijnaldum, Patrik Schick – 3 Goals
Karim Benzema, Ciro Immobile, Manuel Locatelli – 2 Goals

Not many would have predicted Ronaldo to be the tournament’s top goalscorer by the end of the group stage. However, the 36-year-old has captained Portugal beautifully in their so-far-successful bid to defend their title.

In the process, Ronaldo has also established a couple of records:

He became the all-time goalscorer in the European Championships
He is the all-time top international goalscorer

If Portugal have their way, the Juventus striker may very well win the Golden Boot this season.

Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku comes in second with three goals in three appearances. As expected, the Belgian has done well to make himself a viable candidate in the race, alongside Schick from the Czech Republic and Wijnaldum from the Netherlands.

Then you have plenty of players who have scored two goals so far. The noticeable name among them is that of Benzema and Immobile – both of whom got easy relatively easy fixtures in the knockouts.

Now let’s take a look at how this race can shape after the Round of 16.

Ronaldo v Lukaku

Serie A’s top two goalscorers of the season – Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo will lock horns when they face off in the Belgium-Portugal match.

A win here for either side will potentially put them on a collision path with Italy, but those problems are for later. If Belgium win on account of Lukaku’s heroics, he may edge ahead in the Golden Boot race in the next round.

That said, if Ronaldo manages to score and his men still lose the match, the Portuguese may still take the award with six-plus goals or so.

After all, Antoine Griezmann scored 6 goals in his Golden Boot run in the Euro 2016. Ronaldo is almost there and he still has got a good 90 minutes to play.

Immobile can Surprise

31-year-old Ciro Immobile has been at the heart of the Italian attack for most of their international games in 2021. He has scored in both of his matches for the Azzurri in the Euro 2020 and if given a chance, he will do it again.

Facing underdogs and frankly, a slightly less prolific team of Austria, Italy will fancy their chances of another clean sheet with Immobile expected to bring in the goals.

By his side is the young Manuel Locatelli who scored a brace against the Swiss in the group games. Roberto Mancini has shown confidence in the 23-year-old Sassuolo forward and if given the chance, he will prove himself again.

Kane, Mbappe Yet to Deliver

One thing that not many would have predicted was a muted campaign from the likes of Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe. Both of them enjoyed breathtaking seasons in their respective domestic campaigns but since dawning their international jerseys, things have come to a halt.

England’s dearth of goals has been filled in by Raheem Sterling (two goals in three games) while France have had to rely on Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema.

The English will face mighty Germany next, making it harder for Kane to make some progress in the race. France, meanwhile, face Switzerland in the round of 16 and after surviving that group of death with Germany and Portugal, they may find some wiggle room here to attack more freely.
